ACTION PLAN
find books regarding the traditional culture, or anything to do with skincare/obsession for youth
1. create clear collages with the focus taken clearly from sections of the initial collages for this project, so the skincare aspect. make sure the link between westernising and traditional culture is made
2. start using paper/plastic and other consumerism or product type materials to help with the collaging and start making small embedded samples
3. don't stray from focus of westernisation in skincare, choose small sections from all the collages and embedded samples, and make 20 tiny samples following the mark making of these section designs. doesn't have to be intricate, just experiment with each cold colour and displaced materials
4. photocopy a variety of the samples together to form some basis' of the bigger samples. show and talk about which parts of these small samples were successful, and are going to be taken forward
5. experiment with the distinct areas from the photocopies with different types of materials and colours. experiment on the body too
6. make bigger samples, photocopying on the body and off, along the way. aim for 5.
WHATS THE POINT
for this project, i chose to extend my bianca saunders project based on the westernisation of my cultural background. when i first began this project, i had no experience with concept-based projects. this made it quite difficult for me to get a solid hold onto this project, because i knew i had such an interesting theme and oppurtunity, but i couldn't visualise these ideas as art. with my theme, there was an obvious calling from the aesthetics, colour and texture from my collages, and due to this its what i used for the basis of my project. however, it was definitely more of a personal theme and i felt that i didn't really embrace this by just deriving colour and shape from my research.
i also had some interesting primary research of an interview with my mum, a great starting point with her having so much experience in westernisation, more than i experienced as a child. but because i was only probing into the surface of this theme, i really struggled to bring this interesting aspect of my research into my work, and more importantly, i didn't know how to.
following my progress tutorial, i was given some more ideas on how to visualise a personal concept into my work, and this sparked a chain of ideas for this project that i really wanted to get out onto paper. when i began this project, i think there was so many chances to create work from such an interesting theme, and i didn't achieve this, which is the motivation to extend this project. also with it being so personal, it allows me to be driven to learn how to visualise concepts in art, and i want it to be subtly clear to the viewer as well.
Aside from the fact that I had really interesting primary research at hand, and I felt that it was wasted, there is also a number of textile techniques I wanted to have in some aspects of part 1, to assist with specialisation. I feel that I touched upon this within other projects, and very slightly in Bianca Saunders, but not to the intricacy where clear development was shown of how I reached a certain style or decision. Due to the time constraint, and me wanting to delve into so many things but not being sure how, I only explored basic textures and embellishments that I wasn’t happy with because each was completely unrelated from the other, and it didn’t really look like a developing series, which is what I wanted to create. I felt that they didn’t relate because for one embellishment I’d used wooden beads that were dully coloured, and then I’d use shiny jewellery pieces for the next.
A way that I want to improve this is by choosing materials before experimentation of textiles, but still using the undecided materials for collaging, just to help me make my choice. I think deciding a colour palette is important too, but not a restrictive one. I think I will choose 4-5 main colours as a base, and lightly build on top of these with finer embellishments. I also think I need more of a physical aim of what outcomes I want to make, and the detail that these should have, which will allow me to manage my time better with the follow up work to these outcomes, and explore everything that I want to efficiently from my research.
